Father's Day, has a heartfelt history rooted in love and appreciation. The idea of Father's Day was first proposed by Sonora Smart Dodd in 1909. Inspired by her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and a single parent who raised six children, Sonora sought to create a day to honor and celebrate fathers’ contributions and sacrifices.
The first official Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. It took a few decades for the idea to gain national recognition. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. However, it wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed it into law, making Father's Day a permanent national holiday.
